Four Player Types

Four Players is a theory that all gamers fall into one of four categories, depending on why they enjoy games. Richard Bartle, the person who conceptualised this theory, based this off an old type of game called “MUD” games (see a picture below for what they look like).

The four player types are listed below:

  • Achievers: people who like merit and play to learn and show off trophies.
  • Explorers: people who like to push games to their boundaries, discovering glitches or optimisations
  • Socialisers: people who like to play with others, and are motivated by co-operation
  • Killers: people who aim to win, and are driven by competition

You can be more than one type of player – if you want to find out before taking part, then I will link the old questionnaire here: https://matthewbarr.co.uk/bartle/
